Tips on How to Reduce Your Luggage Weight

Reduce your luggage weight on your ski holidayAfter another summer of heatwaves, wildfires and floods, Climate Change has become an undeniable reality.

Reducing your luggage weight will make for a more comfortable journey and it will have a considerable impact on your carbon footprint.

This article by Fly Aware explains how if everyone on a Heathrow to Frankfurt flight took 1kg less in their luggage, in 1 year they would have collectively saved 60 tonnes of CO2!

Read about your Luggage Allowance on Ben’s Bus, including how to pay for more bags

We’ve listed our top tips on getting your baggage weight down. Or read our blog post on how to reduce your carbon footprint and help protect our mountains for future generations

1. PACK LIGHT

DON’T OVERPACK. Give more thought to what goes in your bags. Do you really need all those clothes? Potential Saving = 3kg

LAPTOPS and chargers don’t make for a relaxing holiday. Maybe your phone can do everything? Potential Saving = 2.5kg

LIGHTWEIGHT SKI GEAR. For instance, Merino wool thermals are very light and effective. Potential Saving = 1kg

TOWELS & LINEN. Check if your accommodation could provide or rent towels and sheets. Potential Saving = 1kg

TOILETRIES such as shower gel and shampoo could be bought in resort and shared. Potential Saving = 0.5kg

CO-ORDINATE with your friends so you don’t bring 4 sets of hairdryers / speakers. Potential Saving = 0.5kg

DUTY FREE. Check if your arrival airport offers a pick up service. Potential Saving = 1kg

For those who aren’t regular skiers, or just trying it for the first time, you could rent your ski clothes in resort. This would also save you a lot of money.

2. HIRE SKIS IN RESORT

Hire Skis in Resort and reduce your carbon footprintSki hire shops have come a long way in recent years. Prices are very reasonable and probably comparable with the extra cost of bringing your skis / board on a plane. That extra weight adds a lot of CO2 onto your carbon footprint.

Most shops have a large range of modern equipment and some even deliver to your accommodation. You don’t need to lug your gear to and from the airport and wait at the oversized luggage. Visit our discounted ski hire page to get a quote.

Ski Season 2021/22 Airport Transfers

Posted 19th January 2021

CAN I GO SKIING NEXT YEAR?

2021 2022 Ski SeasonThe 2020/21 season was just a tad frustrating for skiers and boarders, as nearly all ski holidays were cancelled. So many of you are now asking…. will ski resorts open in 2022?

All European ski resorts will almost certainly open for the 2021 / 2022 season. High vaccination and low hospitalisation rates have brought confidence back to the ski holiday industry. However, many Tour Operators are no longer running the traditional catered chalet holiday, partly due to Brexit. Instead, self-catered accommodation seems increasingly popular.

IS THERE A FOOD OR SHOPPING DELIVERY SERVICE IN THE FRENCH ALPS?

One of the only good things to come out of the pandemic is the incredible rise in food delivery services. These delivery services do exist in France and they are run by the French supermarkets, the equivalents of Tesco and Sainsbury’s in the UK. However, they are geared to French households looking to do their weekly food shop. So the websites are in French and it’s full of stuff you’ll never need if you’re just going on holiday for a week. Some of them also don’t deliver to the mountains.

We’re developing a really easy-to-use English website that cuts out all the unnecessary stuff. We’ll only offer you what we think you want on a self-catered ski holiday in an apartment or chalet. Even better, we’ll gear the options to your group size. This means less waste and less packaging. It’s a more sustainable and eco-friendly way to do your ski holiday shop.

The likes of Deliveroo and Just-Eat don’t operate, as far as we are aware, in the ski resorts. However, a new company called Luge Livraison seem to be catering for deliveries from restaurants but their choice seems very limited. There is also a meal delivery service called huski. They create a selection of ready-made quality meals such as Tartiflette, Fondues, Raclettes, Lasagne and Beef Mondeuse. Their kitchens are based in Bourg St Maurice and they deliver them to your accommodation. It’s perfect for your for your arrival day when you’re too tired to cook or go to a restaurant.

Advice for Bad Traffic Days

HOW TO TRAVEL SMART ON BAD-TRAFFIC DAYS IN THE ALPS

Travel Smart on bad traffic days in the French AlpsAt certain hours of the day, on certain days of the year, the roads are so saturated with traffic they become gridlocked. This has got worse over the past few years and we are now seeing some of our transfers to Tignes take up to 7-8 hours!

The worst area is between Bourg St Maurice and Moutiers. Everyone coming down from Val d’Isere, Tignes, La Rosiere, Les Arcs and La Plagne uses this road, which is only 1 lane in places.

The worst time of day is usually between between 7am – 1pm (heading out of the resort). On the school holidays dates, the traffic is truly horrific.

We therefore don’t run any buses at certain times of the day during the school holidays. Not only does it make for an unpleasant ride for our customers, but our drivers need to take legal breaks for safety reasons. We will not knowingly put our drivers and customers at risk.

It is much better to take an earlier bus to the airport and spend time there, where there are toilet facilities, space to stretch your legs and plenty of shops, restaurants, bars and cafes. Read our tips below on what your options are.

CONSIDER TAKING THE TRAIN FROM BOURG ST MAURICE TO MOUTIERS

If you’re travelling from Val d’Isere, Tignes, Les Arcs or La Plagne to any airport, we may have later services from Moutiers. You could book a Single with us to your resort and then make another Single booking from Moutiers to your airport. You can then take a local bus or taxi to Bourg St Maurice (or the funicular from Les Arcs), from where you can take a train to Moutiers. This would obviously dodge all the traffic. We’d advise booking in advance.

If you plan on leaving the airport, make sure you’re back there 2 hours before your flight as the queues for Check In and Security can be quite long!

KILL TIME WITH A SHORT TRIP INTO GENEVA

Aéroport de Geneve de St Martin de BellevilleIf you arrive at Geneva Airport well in advance for your flight, you could consider taking a train into Geneva and having a coffee or some lunch overlooking the lake. This is a much more civilised way to spend your day!

– Click here for details on the 2 main locations to store your bags at Geneva Airport.

– Click here for details on the regular and very cheap train shuttle service between Geneva Airport and Geneva City Centre.

KILLING TIME AT LYON AIRPORT

Bus Aéroport de Lyon St Exupéry de St Martin de BellevilleThere’s a luggage store at Lyon Airport run by SafeBag. Lyon is the culinary capital of France, so it’s worthwhile heading into town if you have plenty of time to spare. Otherwise the airport has fairly decent facilities.

– The Rhones Express train service takes about 30 mins to arrive at Lyon Part-Dieu, which is the centre of town and the Central Business District.

– Another, better option could be to take a taxi to main square in the nearby town of Genas, which is only about a 10 minute drive away.

KILLING TIME AT GRENOBLE AIRPORT

Aéroport de Grenoble de MottaretThere’s no luggage store at Grenoble Airport and it’s in the middle of nowhere, so there’s not much to do. There is a little village close by called St-Geoirs which has some restaurants and a lively square which sometimes has week-end markets.

– Click here for details on the shuttle bus service between Grenoble Airport and Grenoble City Centre.

– The airport has a very good restaurant in the Departures Lounge. You need to walk up the stairs at the far end and you will enter a bar. Behind that is the restaurant and terrace overlooking the runway.

– There is a restaurant called La Grillon on the edge of the airport grounds. It a safe, short walk on flat ground. We recommend checking the opening times and booking in advance.

BE PREPARED – BRING PLENTY OF FOOD AND WATER

Food and Water on Ski Transfer JourneyMake sure you have enough food and water for the journey. This is especially true if you are diabetic.

Keep any medicines in your hand luggage and avoid drinking coffee before your journey.

Make use of the toilets before you get into your vehicle. Ask the driver if you need to go en route.

Bring a book, some games for the kids and lots of downloaded videos to view on your device.
