Cheap Ski Holidays in the French Alps

HOW TO FIND A CHEAP SKI HOLIDAY IN THE FRENCH ALPS

Cheap Ski Holidays

Finding cheap ski holidays has become far easier in recent years. Low cost airlines and shared ski transfer companies such as Ben’s Bus have made holidaying in the French Alps easier and more affordable than ever. Accommodation providers have also played their part and as a result, you now have far more flexibility and freedom in organising your own ski break. Booking the different parts of your holiday yourself means you can tailor it to your needs, priorities and budget. Many seasoned skiers choose this independent method as they know what they want and what they need to look out for. Less experienced skiers may wish to consider a Tour Operator who can put a package together for them.

BOOKING A PACKAGE THROUGH A TOUR OPERATOR

Ski HolidaysFor many people, especially first time skiers, booking a package holiday through a Tour Operator or Travel Agent still represents the most convenient way to book a ski holiday. If you don’t have the time to research all the different parts – flights, accommodation, transfers, ski lessons, ski hire etc – then this is probably the simplest method for you. There are many specialist ski companies out there and a lot of them will happily offer you advice on which ski resort best suits your needs. All holidays are expensive and skiing holidays are no exception, especially so due to the cost of the lift pass, so it’s important to choose the right resort and the right package for you.

SKI – DRIVE HOLIDAY SPECIALISTS

Erna Low Ski Drive SpecialistsErna Low specialise in ski holidays to the French Alps and have been organising alpine holidays since 1932. Their ethos is the same now as it has always been – provide great skiing holidays with fantastic customer service. They offer accommodation for all budgets, but specialise in premium ski apartments in France’s top resorts. They are long standing specialists in self-drive packages which include a flexiplus Eurotunnel crossing, giving you great flexibility when travelling to the Alps. You can tailor bespoke packages on their new website, ranging from accommodation only or the full works with travel, ski hire, ski passes and ski school if required.

HOW TO FIND CHEAP SKI HOLIDAYS – OUR TOP TIPS

1. Choose Your DATES Wisely. This is the biggest driver in terms of how much you will pay for your ski break. Here are some dates to avoid:

  • Christmas and New Year weeks: Budget Holidays are hard to find at this time of year. Search around and you could still find some bargains.
  • UK February Half Term Holidays: These dates will depend on where you are in the UK you are. Flights will be expensive.
  • French School Holidays: Visit our Top Tips on Avoiding Traffic blog post to see what dates in February the Frenchies will be on holiday.

2. Choose Your RESORT Wisely. Don’t think you have to head to a famous ski resort. It depends on what you are after and there are loads of cheaper options. Consider these factors:

  • Skiing ability Ski passes for smaller resorts with smaller ski areas are loads cheaper than the bigger, more famous ones.
  • Family or Friends? Do you want to party or is childcare and good food more important? Choose a specialist resort to cater for your group.
  • Apres Ski If bars and nightlife are important to you, then pick a resort like Les Deux Alpes, Val d’Isere, Val Thorens or Tignes. If you’re not interested in partying, then avoid the bigger, more expensive resorts.

3. Reduce your TRAVEL costs. Flights and your transfers will be your biggest travel costs. Follow these tips to bring these down:

  • Research everything before booking anything. Don’t book anything until you have calculated the total cost of flights & transfers together.
  • Look Around for Flights. Use a flight comparison website like skyscanner to get the best deal.
  • Be Flexible with your Airport in the UK. It’s cheaper to travel further from your home to your UK Airport than from your French Airport to your Ski Resort.
  • Used a Shared Transfer Service Ben’s Bus has shared transfers from Geneva Airport, Grenoble Airport and Lyon Airport.
  • Travel on a Sunday? Flights are definitely cheaper but make sure you you don’t arrive too late as public transport is limited on a Sunday!

BRIDES LES BAINS SKI RESORT

Brides Les Bains Airport Shuttle BusBrides Les Bains is a small, quiet, family resort and spa town in the famous Meribel valley. Staying in Brides Les Bains is an affordable way of experiencing the enormous 3 Valleys ski area, which offers over 600km of marked runs, serviced by 200 ski lifts and gives you access to skiing in Val Thorens and Courchevel. How to Avoid French Holiday Ski Resort Traffic

Updated 8th May 2024

DRIVING TO THE ALPS FOR THE SCHOOL HOLIDAYS? READ OUR TOP TIPS FOR BEATING THE TRAFFIC

Avoid School Holiday Traffic French Alps Ski TransferIf you’ve travelled to a French ski resort during the school holidays, you’ve probably experienced some heavy traffic. Bottlenecks can form at motorway toll stations and when 2 lanes turn into the 1-lane mountain roads, causing huge tailbacks. If it’s snowing, things can get really messy as vehicles pull over to put chains on or, even worse, lose control and cause an accident.

It can be a stressful start or end to your holiday. We’ve created some top tips to help you avoid spending half a day stuck in a traffic jam. Or read our suggestions on how to kill time at the airport.

WHAT ARE THE WORST DATES TO TRAVEL?

Worst dates to travel to french ski resortsThe French take holidaying as seriously as they take striking. And they’re good at it. They get 2 weeks off for Christmas and then another 2 weeks for February half term. In February they split the country up into 3 zones, each one taking a different 2 week period. This spreads the load evenly, but it means there are a total of 8 Saturdays in the winter season when the traffic can be pretty nasty.

Here’s a list of dates when you should expect a lot of cars on the road. You should plan your journey more carefully on these dates and take some precautions to make sure you don’t get caught out.

HEADING UP THE MOUNTAIN

Traffic up the mountain21st & 28th December 2024 – You may find the days either side of these will be busier than usual too.

8th, 15th, 22nd February & 1st March 2025 – The 15th & 22nd February will be particularly bad.

HEADING DOWN THE MOUNTAIN

Traffic down the mountain28th December 2024 & 4th January 2025– If it is snowing on these dates, the traffic will be horrendous!

15th & 22nd February and 1st & 8th March 2025 – The 22nd February & 1st March will be the worst dates.

The Annecy Carnival the 15th March and the Geneva Motor Show is the 1st March. You should avoid these areas after 8am if you can.

BE PREPARED – BRING PLENTY OF FOOD AND WATER

Food and Water on Ski Transfer JourneyHowever you are getting to and from the resort, whether it be on a shared ski transfer with Ben’s Bus, a private transfer or driving in your own car, make sure you have enough food and water, especially if you are diabetic. Keep any medicines in your hand luggage and make use of the toilets before you get into your vehicle.

It’s not unusual for an airport transfer from Geneva to Tignes to take 5 or even 6 hours instead of the usual 3 & 1/2 hours. So bring a book, some games for the kids and lots of pre-downloaded videos to view on your device.

AVOID THE MOUNTAIN ROADS BETWEEN 7AM – 2PM

Snail's Pace Mountain TrafficPlan your journey in advance. If you’re heading up to the resort, try to get to Grenoble or Albertville by 8am. Between 11am and 3pm the roads climbing the mountain can be moving at a snail’s pace. When leaving the resort, try to do it before 07:00 or after 14:00. The worst areas are between Bourg St Maurice – Moutiers (transfers from Val Thorens & Les Menuires don’t take that road), the ring road around Grenoble and the Lyon and Chambery motorway peages.

If you’re on a Ben’s Bus leaving Grenoble, Geneva or Lyon Airports between 9am – 4pm, you will probably hit some heavy traffic. Your Ben’s Bus eTicket will mention if we have allowed extra time for your journey. If you are heading to La Plagne, Les Arcs, Val d’Isere or Tignes, our drivers may have to take a legal break en-route. This is to comply with EU legislation and is designed to protect all road users. Use the facilities at the airport or in the resort before you leave as not all of our vehicles have toilets. If you need to go en-route, just ask the driver to pull over at the next convenient place.

LOCAL KNOWLEDGE IS GOLD!

Ben's Bus Ski Transfer VehiclesBook your ski transfer with a reputable and established company. Ben’s Bus has been working in the mountains for 15 years and works with local coach companies. Our drivers know the cheeky short cuts and how to avoid the bottlenecks. Our coordinators consult traffic websites and traffic cameras and our drivers and reps report where the roads are congested.

Top Tip: Don’t rely completely on Sat-Nav as it might try to take you across mountain passes that are closed in the winter!

CHOOSE YOUR DATES WISELY

French School Holiday Dates

The easiest way to avoid the rush and the crowds is to take your ski holiday in January or March. You’ll also get cheaper deals on accommodation and the queues for the ski lifts will be much smaller. Plus, you’ll get that table at your favourite restaurant! This website is a good source of information about school holidays in France https://about-france.com/school-holidays.htm Of course if you have kids in school, then that’s not possible.

–          –          –          –          –            –          –          –          –          –            –          –          –          –          –            –

TOILETS

We cannot guarantee that our vehicles will have toilets on board or if there are, that they will be in operation. Please do make use of the facilities in resort or at the airport before boarding our bus.

If there is no toilet or it is not working or it is locked, ask the driver to stop along the way as we do pass motorway service areas. To be extra sure, you could ask your rep to have a word with the driver before you leave to ensure he does understand that you may need to stop en-route.

REASONS FOR TOILETS BEING OUT OF OPERATION

There are genuine reasons for the toilets not being in operation. A lot of our buses park in the mountains overnight and the chemicals can freeze at very low temperatures. Buses also need special facilities to empty the toilets. If they over-fill, it can get a bit messy (and smelly!) Our buses are sometimes used all day and so may not have the time or opportunity to visit these special facilities.

Moutiers Airport Transfers

Moutiers Airport TransfersTransfers to Moutiers are available from 3 different airports with Ben’s Bus. Our network of shared transfers include buses from GENEVA Airport to Moutiers, GRENOBLE Airport to Moutiers and LYON Airport to Moutiers. Moutiers is a town on the valley floor and the transport hub for the Three Valley ski resorts. Lots of buses leave the very busy Moutiers bus station for various ski resorts. It’s only a 2 hour journey from all 3 airports, mostly on motorways or major trunk roads.

The furthest airport from Moutiers is Lyon, but most of the journey is on motorways. This means you can travel further, although there are obviously extra costs due to the tolls. MOUTIERS BUS STATION

Moutiers Bus StationOur buses drop and pick up our customers from the main bus station in Moutiers, the “Gare Routiere”. Click to see the location in gmaps. Our airport shuttle buses to Geneva (GVA), Grenoble (GNB) and Lyon (LYS) Airports usually drop you off at and pick you up from the Bays 13 – 16. On Saturdays, the bus station becomes extremely busy, so sometimes we have to use other bays. The best thing to do is to keep an eye on all the buses coming into the coach station. If in doubt, just ask a driver or a member of the bus station staff if that is your bus. The TV screens may show our buses but this cannot be 100% relied upon.

CLOSEST AIRPORT TO MOUTIERS

Chambery is the closest airport to Moutiers, but there are a very limited number of international flights to Chambery. Geneva (119km), Grenoble (157km) & Lyon (162 km) Airports are all about a 2 hour drive. However, the traffic on the roads leading into and out of Moutiers can be quite heavy at week-ends. We allow more time for this journey when we expect congested traffic conditions.

Val Thorens Airport Transfers

TRANSFERS TO VAL THORENS

Val Thorens Airport TransfersSkiing in Val Thorens this winter? Thinking of flying? Then you need to consider how to get from your chosen airport to Val Thorens. Get it right and you could save a lot of time and money. You have a choice of 4 airports, Geneva, Grenoble, Lyon and Chambery and each one has its pros and cons. We’ve listed the transfer times and prices from each airport below.

The next decision is whether to book a shared or private transfer or a hire car. Shared transfers are the cheapest and most environmentally friendly option. Private transfers are pricier, but can be timed perfectly for your flights. Hire cars offer the flexibility you may need, as long as you’re ok driving on potentially snowy, congested roads and you’re prepared to pay for tolls, petrol and parking.

Our transfers to Val Thorens run from Geneva, Grenoble and Lyon airports throughout the 2024 / 25 ski season. We offer the best value shared transfers to Val Thorens and its neighbouring resorts. The free in-resort shuttle buses dart around the resort making multiple stops in convenient locations, so you can get from the bus station to your accommodation. These shuttle buses also connect the UCPA centre to the main resort. You can see where the Bus Station is on google maps or click the map below to see Interactive Tourist Office Map. Our e-Tickets display this map as well as the pick up time for your stop.

VAL THORENS SKI RESORT

Val Thorens Transfer BusVal Thorens sits at an altitude of 2300m, claiming the title of The Highest Ski Resort in Europe. Known for its party atmosphere, it’s a popular destination for young groups, as it has a great selection of bars, nightclubs and restaurants. The only resorts rivaling it for all-round appeal are Tignes and Val d’Isere.

The village was constructed in the 1960’s as a purpose built ski resort. Despite this, some new and renovated developments have given it a more attractive alpine feel. It is part of the 3 Valleys ski area which offers over 600km of runs, serviced by 200 ski lifts. It has 49 blacks, 175 reds, 207 blues and 66 greens. If you have a 3 valleys ski pass, you can access 2 glaciers, ensuring your holiday is snow-sure.
