Skiing in The Time of Brexit

Posted 6th December 2020

HOW WILL BREXIT AFFECT ME IF I WANT TO GO SKIING IN FRANCE?

Thinking about skiing in France in the 2021 / 2022 season but worried about what paperwork you will need? There have been a few changes due to Brexit, so it’s understandable if you’re confused. We’ve been keeping a close eye on things and have summarised what we’ve learnt below.

Our blog post about entry requirements for Switzerland and France is also quite useful.

Our page dedicated to Coronavirus and Safety explains what you can do to help everyone stay safe whilst on our ski transfer buses and on holiday.

WHICH AIRPORT ARE YOU FLYING INTO?

Airport Requirements Covid and BrexitIf you are flying into Grenoble Airport or Lyon Airport, and skiing in France, then you only need to worry about what France asks of you. You’ll either need to be fully vaccinated or have a negative test. Regardless of where you are coming from, you will need to fill in the Declaration sur l’honneur form.

If you are flying into Geneva Airport, then you also need to consider what the Swiss ask of you. If you are fully vaccinated and have tickets booked to transit straight to France, you should be ok. All the ski resorts we cover are in regions in France so you need to ensure your comply with the French rules. You will need to fill in an entry form before landing at Geneva Airport.

I AM BRITISH AND COMING IN FROM THE UK

UK Flag Rules on Brits travelling to EUBrexit hasn’t had much impact on Brits holidaying in France. However, since the UK’s departure from the EU, British nationals are required to have at least 6 months validity on their passport. Use the Government’s passport validity tool to be sure. Ensure you have adequate health insurance and/or check your E111 is still valid. You can find more up to date info, including about Covid-19 on the UK FCO page for France or the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs website. The Ambassador’s website has regular updates with the latest news.

The information above is intended as a guide only. Ben’s Bus cannot be held responsible for inaccurate or out of date information. To be certain of the current laws, guidelines and entry requirements, you should visit the official Government websites. This page was last updated on the 26th Nov 2021.

Ski Holiday Flights | How to Reduce CO2 Emissions

Updated 8th May 2024

HOW TO REDUCE YOUR CARBON FOOTPRINT WHEN FLYING TO YOUR SKI HOLIDAY

how to reduce carbon footprint and fly to go skiingAfter a summer of extreme floods, heatwaves and wildfires, the issue of Climate Change has never felt so real. Sustainability has become an important part of all our lives. Many travellers are now asking “How can I reduce my carbon footprint and still fly to my ski holiday?”

Carbon offsetting initiatives such as easyJet’s sustainability scheme are helpful, but they don’t eliminate the CO2 emitted when flying. However, done right and over a certain distance, flying is not actually as bad as some people think. Trains and cars still use energy and electricity is not yet 100% green. The extra emissions caused by congestion if everyone were to stop taking planes needs to be considered.

TOP TIPS TO REDUCE YOUR CO2 EMISSIONS WHEN FLYING

1. TAKE DIRECT FLIGHTS

Take Direct Flights to save emissionsA large percentage of greenhouse gas emissions on short flights are used on take-off. There’s a huge selection of direct flights to airports such as Geneva, Grenoble and Lyon, so it’s hard to justify stop-over flights via places like Amsterdam or Munich.

If you can’t find a flight that suits your budget / time, Skyscanner has a great function where you can click “Add Nearby Airports”. You could also fly into one airport and out of another if the times / prices suit you better.

2. USE PUBLIC TRANSPORT TO GET TO THE AIRPORT

Public Transport to AirportFor some people, driving to the airport cannot be helped. Electric cars are great, but remember that not all electricity is green yet and your car still contributes to congestion. Consider getting a taxi to the bus / train station if you have bags / children in tow.

Most UK airports do have good public transport access. Find out how to get to your UK airport by bus or by train. It can also be cheaper when you factor in airport parking and it’s a nicer way to arrive, since you’re usually dropped right outside Departures.

3. USE SHARED TRANSFERS TO GET UP TO YOUR SKI RESORT

Shared Transfers Reduce Carbon FootprintMost of the big resorts like Tignes, Val Thorens and Val d’Isere have at least one shared transfer service, public bus or train service. See a list of which ski resorts we cover.

Just one Ben’s Bus can potentially replace 15-20 private transfers / hire cars on the road. On the busy weeks for ski resorts, the congestion on the access roads can sometimes result in total gridlock. This slow moving traffic caused by so many vehicles considerably increases the CO2 emissions / person.

4. HIRE SKIS IN RESORT

Hire Skis in ResortSki hire shops have come a long way in recent years. Prices are very reasonable and probably comparable with the extra cost of bringing your skis / board on a plane. That extra weight adds a lot of CO2 onto your carbon footprint.

Most shops have a large range of modern equipment and some even deliver to your accommodation. You don’t need to lug your gear to and from the airport and wait at the oversized luggage. Visit our discounted ski hire page to get a quote.

5. PACK LIGHT

Pack Light to Save the PlanetEvery extra kilo in your bag means more CO2 going into the atmosphere. This article by Fly Aware explains how if everyone on a Heathrow to Frankfurt flight took 1kg less in their luggage, in 1 year they would have collectively saved 60 tonnes of Co2!! You’ll also put less strain on your body, so you’ll arrive fresher and fitter to enjoy your ski holiday.

Set yourself a challenge this year to see which of our top tips you can use and how many kilos you can shed:

DON’T OVERPACK. Give more thought to what goes in your bags. Do you really need all those clothes? Potential Saving = 3kg

LAPTOPS and chargers don’t make for a relaxing holiday. Maybe your phone can do everything? Potential Saving = 2.5kg

LIGHTWEIGHT SKI GEAR. For instance, Merino wool thermals are very light and effective. Potential Saving = 1kg

TOWELS & LINEN. Check if your accommodation could provide or rent towels and sheets. Potential Saving = 1kg

TOILETRIES such as shower gel and shampoo could be bought in resort and shared. Potential Saving = 0.5kg

CO-ORDINATE with your friends so you don’t bring 4 sets of hairdryers / speakers. Potential Saving = 0.5kg

DUTY FREE. Check if your arrival airport offers a pick up service. Potential Saving = 1kg

– LOSE WEIGHT. Easier said than done! Potential Saving = ????kg

For those who aren’t regular skiers, or just trying it for the first time, you could rent your ski clothes in resort. This would also save you a lot of money.

6. CHOOSE A RESORT IN EUROPE

The US and Japan are inviting, exciting destinations if you’re lucky enough to afford it. Perhaps those long-haul flights could be used for a longer trip though? You could include skiing in a 3 week holiday to that country? The ICAO has developed a flight CO2 calculator. Below is a list of how much CO2 is produced for a Round trip flight from London, in economy class.

Tokyo, Japan =  774kg of CO2

Denver, Colorado, United States =  764kg of CO2

Geneva, Switzerland =  200kg of CO2

As a comparison, driving to Geneva, Switzerland = 171kg of CO2 (according to the CO2 myclimate website). This is based on a 2,000km round trip from London to Geneva in a mid-range petrol car with 4 of you in the car. This is interestingly not that much less than flying! Put a roof box on the car and it adds between 10-25% to your fuel bill, so flying becomes a carbon-efficient way of getting to the resort.

Tignes Airport Transfers

Tignes Airport TransfersBen’s Bus operates regular week-end transfers to Tignes from Geneva, Grenoble and Lyon Airports. Geneva Airport is probably the most convenient airport as it’s the closest and has so many flights, but Grenoble and Lyon are both good alternatives. With prices from just over £44pp, shared transfers are the cheapest and most environmentally friendly way of getting to Tignes. We generally use larger coaches, which offer a more comfortable journey as they have more space than private taxis or hire cars.

Tignes is a hugely popular French ski resort, linked with Val d’Isere. Their combined ski area boasts an impressive 300km of piste and enjoys an enviable snow record. The resort is split into 4 villages. All our transfers make stops at Tignes Les Brevieres, Tignes 1800, Tignes Le Lac (for Le Lavachet) and Tignes Val Claret. Our Ben’s Bus Plus upgrade gives you greater refund protection and flexibility to change your booking for free.

LYON TO TIGNES TRANSFERS

Lyon to Tignes TransfersLyon Airport is the furthest airport from Tignes but most of the journey is on motorways, so although that means more tolls, it also means you can travel faster. Our transfers from Lyon to Tignes run on Saturdays from the 14th December 2024 – 5th April 2025. The price of a transfer from Lyon Airport with Ben’s Bus is £97.50pp Return, £53pp Single.

A GUIDE TO THE TIGNES SKI RESORT

Tignes Transfer BusTignes and Val d’Isere make up the amazing ski area formerly known as “Espace Killy”. It offers some of the best skiing in the world. There are 300km of marked runs, serviced by 88 ski lifts. Although it has a wide range of pistes catering for all types (27 black runs, 40 reds, 66 blues and 23 greens) it is really a resort for intermediate and advanced skiers. Its position between the French and Italian Alps gives it a consistent and reliable snowfall. This, as well as the access to 2 glaciers, including the famous Grand Motte Glacier, ensures your holiday is snow guaranteed.

The ski resort of Tignes was conceived in the 1950’s, when the French government-built a dam flooded the original village. The resulting purpose built resort, located further up the mountain, suffered from the architectural style of the time. However, what the resort lacks in architectural aesthetics, it makes up for in skiing and facilities. It has plenty of bars, cafes and restaurants and a modern sports and leisure complex. It is an affordable alternative to its glamorous neighbour, Val d’Isere.
