Environment and Charitable Donations

YOUR BEN’S BUS SKI TRANSFER IS CARBON NEUTRAL!

Carbon Neutral Ben's Bus Ski TransfersWe genuinely care about the environment and our climate. It was one of the reasons Ben started Ben’s Bus. The mountain roads are too often clogged with thousands of cars polluting our clean mountain air.

Climate Change and Global Warming are having an undeniable effect on ski resorts. By travelling on one of our shared transfers, your carbon footprint will already be minimal.

However, we’ve gone a step further and now fully offset the carbon emitted by our buses. Conventional carbon offsetting schemes have their flaws, so we’ve devised our own way of reducing CO2 emissions.

Solar Aid Charity to offset carbon emissionsWe calculate our vehicle emissions and turn that into a monetary value. Instead of buying ‘carbon credits’, to be sure our money will reduce CO2 emissions, we will donate an estimated £7,000 / ski season to the charity SolarAid

The award-winning SolarAid helps provide sustainable, renewable energy systems to villages in Africa, reducing their use of polluting and dangerous kerosene lamps and generators. Here are a few of their fantastic initiatives:

Light a Village: installing affordable home solar systems and developing a scalable, sustainable business model for energy as a service.

Health facilities: Plug and play solar systems power handheld medical appliances to be used in rural health facilities

Solar Entrepreneurs: Creating a local market by training and supporting men and women within the community to become solar entrepreneurs.

Tackling e-waste: Training and equipping local repair technicians to fix non-working solar lights. This helps keep them out of landfill.

REDUCE YOUR IMPACT ON THE ENVIRONMENT WHEN YOU FLY

Carbon Neutral Ben's Bus Ski TransfersYou can help by reducing your impact on the environment yet further by making some small gestures when you fly to your ski holiday. Collectively, the ski community can help keep our ski resorts open for future generations by making some changes to the way we travel.

We’ve written a blog post with lots of suggestion on how you can further lower your carbon footprint

BEN’S BUS CHARITIES

bens bus airport ski transfers charitiesIn addition to our carbon neutrality scheme, Ben’s Bus supports a number of charities in the UK and abroad. As a member of the sporting and travel community, we believe we have a duty to give something back.

When you book a shared airport ski transfer with us, we’ll ask you if you wish to donate 25p to charity. If you do, Ben’s Bus matches that 25p. So each booking, whether it be from Grenoble Airport, Geneva Airport or Lyon Airport, will result in a total of 50p going to good causes. We have a blog post here showing how much we raised at the end of the 2023 / 2024 ski season.

The 4 charities that Ben’s Bus and its customers have supported over the years are listed below.

Ben’s Bus itself also likes to help a youth sports club. This year we are delighted to be sponsoring the U11’s Wessex Giants

We also try to make a one off payments each year to contemporary causes, such as meals for the NHS during the height of the COVID Crisis, or the Red Cross to help Ukrainian refugees.

In total, Ben’s Bus and our customers have together given over £12,500 to charitable causes.

SOLARAID

They mainly operate in Africa and Asia by improving access to water, sanitation and hygiene to those that need it most. A quote from their website reads “We tackle the crisis from all angles. We work with local partners to deliver clean water and toilets and promote good hygiene, and campaign to make change happen for everyone everywhere.”

Our customers have raised £1, 351 towards this charity and Ben’s Bus Ltd has donated a total of £1, 712.

SHELTER

Our customers have raised £1, 351 towards this charity and Ben’s Bus Ltd has donated a total of £1, 712.

BRITISH SNOWSPORTS FUND

Ben’s Bus has been helping out our young snowsports stars for a few years now by offering free seats on our shared ski transfers out of Geneva Airport and Grenoble Airport to a few select athletes so they can train in resort. In 2016, we decided to take our support a step further. We became an official supporter of the British Snowsports Fund, a great funding initiative set up to support Britain’s future Olympians and the development of emerging British snowsports talents. We’re hoping that this will raise the profile of skiing in Great Britain whilst helping to fund our up-and-coming stars.

Our customers have raised £974 towards this charity and Ben’s Bus Ltd has donated a total of £1, 274.

YOUTH SPORTS CLUB SPONSORSHIP

In addition to the charitable funds raised by our customers and matched by us, Ben’s Bus itself sponsors the Wessex Giants, an under 11 football side playing in the south Somerset youth league http://www.wessexfc.co.uk/ They play their home games at Walton on the Somerset levels in the shadow of Glastonbury Tor. A statement from the club reads “The core of the team have been together for a few years under head coach Elliot Foster and assistant Matt Hanley. This season has seen the addition of some exciting new players and new sponsorship from Ben’s Bus which has provided smart new kits and assistance to fund training arrangements. Many thanks to Ben’s Bus. The Giants will wear their shirts with pride, challenge local teams and most of all, keep active and have fun playing football!

flying into one airport and out of another

If you are flying into one airport and out of another, then you cannot book a ‘Return’. You would need to make 2 separate ‘Single’ bookings for each leg of the journey. This is standard practice in the travel industry and we cannot offer any discounts if you need to book 2 Singles.

If you are travelling to 1 resort but coming back from another, you would also need to make 2 separate ‘Single’ bookings. We can’t help with transfers between resorts. We’d advise either booking a taxi for that journey, or take a public bus down to the town on the valley floor (Moutiers, Aime, Bourg St Maurice or Bourg d’Oisans) and then another public bus to go back up.

Open up our Online Booking Form and click on the “Single” button. Then click the ‘From’ dropdown to see the list of airports. Underneath the airports, you will see the resorts listed. You can select a resort for booking your Single journey from the resort back to the airport.

Cheap Ski Holidays in the French Alps

HOW TO FIND A CHEAP SKI HOLIDAY IN THE FRENCH ALPS

Cheap Ski Holidays

Finding cheap ski holidays has become far easier in recent years. Low cost airlines and shared ski transfer companies such as Ben’s Bus have made holidaying in the French Alps easier and more affordable than ever. Accommodation providers have also played their part and as a result, you now have far more flexibility and freedom in organising your own ski break. Booking the different parts of your holiday yourself means you can tailor it to your needs, priorities and budget. Many seasoned skiers choose this independent method as they know what they want and what they need to look out for. Less experienced skiers may wish to consider a Tour Operator who can put a package together for them.

BOOKING A PACKAGE THROUGH A TOUR OPERATOR

Ski HolidaysFor many people, especially first time skiers, booking a package holiday through a Tour Operator or Travel Agent still represents the most convenient way to book a ski holiday. If you don’t have the time to research all the different parts – flights, accommodation, transfers, ski lessons, ski hire etc – then this is probably the simplest method for you. There are many specialist ski companies out there and a lot of them will happily offer you advice on which ski resort best suits your needs. All holidays are expensive and skiing holidays are no exception, especially so due to the cost of the lift pass, so it’s important to choose the right resort and the right package for you.

SKI – DRIVE HOLIDAY SPECIALISTS

Erna Low Ski Drive SpecialistsErna Low specialise in ski holidays to the French Alps and have been organising alpine holidays since 1932. Their ethos is the same now as it has always been – provide great skiing holidays with fantastic customer service. They offer accommodation for all budgets, but specialise in premium ski apartments in France’s top resorts. They are long standing specialists in self-drive packages which include a flexiplus Eurotunnel crossing, giving you great flexibility when travelling to the Alps. You can tailor bespoke packages on their new website, ranging from accommodation only or the full works with travel, ski hire, ski passes and ski school if required.

HOW TO FIND CHEAP SKI HOLIDAYS – OUR TOP TIPS

1. Choose Your DATES Wisely. This is the biggest driver in terms of how much you will pay for your ski break. Here are some dates to avoid:

  • Christmas and New Year weeks: Budget Holidays are hard to find at this time of year. Search around and you could still find some bargains.
  • UK February Half Term Holidays: These dates will depend on where you are in the UK you are. Flights will be expensive.
  • French School Holidays: Visit our Top Tips on Avoiding Traffic blog post to see what dates in February the Frenchies will be on holiday.

2. Choose Your RESORT Wisely. Don’t think you have to head to a famous ski resort. It depends on what you are after and there are loads of cheaper options. Consider these factors:

  • Skiing ability Ski passes for smaller resorts with smaller ski areas are loads cheaper than the bigger, more famous ones.
  • Family or Friends? Do you want to party or is childcare and good food more important? Choose a specialist resort to cater for your group.
  • Apres Ski If bars and nightlife are important to you, then pick a resort like Les Deux Alpes, Val d’Isere, Val Thorens or Tignes. If you’re not interested in partying, then avoid the bigger, more expensive resorts.

3. Reduce your TRAVEL costs. Flights and your transfers will be your biggest travel costs. Follow these tips to bring these down:

  • Research everything before booking anything. Don’t book anything until you have calculated the total cost of flights & transfers together.
  • Look Around for Flights. Use a flight comparison website like skyscanner to get the best deal.
  • Be Flexible with your Airport in the UK. It’s cheaper to travel further from your home to your UK Airport than from your French Airport to your Ski Resort.
  • Used a Shared Transfer Service Ben’s Bus has shared transfers from Geneva Airport, Grenoble Airport and Lyon Airport.
  • Travel on a Sunday? Flights are definitely cheaper but make sure you you don’t arrive too late as public transport is limited on a Sunday!

SAINTE FOY SKI RESORT

sainte foy transfer busSainte Foy-Tarentaise is an old Savoie-style village located on the road up to Val d’Isere and Tignes, about 12km from Bourg St Maurice. It remains relatively unspoilt and quiet but has enough restaurants and bars to keep you occupied, as well as a couple of spas. It is a mecca for off-pisters, but has little in the way of groomed slopes or lifts. However, the Espace Killy ski area is only a short drive away. You can therefore get taxis up to Val d’Isere or Tignes for day trips. There is also a free shuttle bus that takes you from Sainte Foy Station to the village of Sainte Foy.

How to Avoid French Holiday Ski Resort Traffic

Updated 8th May 2024

DRIVING TO THE ALPS FOR THE SCHOOL HOLIDAYS? READ OUR TOP TIPS FOR BEATING THE TRAFFIC

Avoid School Holiday Traffic French Alps Ski TransferIf you’ve travelled to a French ski resort during the school holidays, you’ve probably experienced some heavy traffic. Bottlenecks can form at motorway toll stations and when 2 lanes turn into the 1-lane mountain roads, causing huge tailbacks. If it’s snowing, things can get really messy as vehicles pull over to put chains on or, even worse, lose control and cause an accident.

It can be a stressful start or end to your holiday. We’ve created some top tips to help you avoid spending half a day stuck in a traffic jam. Or read our suggestions on how to kill time at the airport.

WHAT ARE THE WORST DATES TO TRAVEL?

Worst dates to travel to french ski resortsThe French take holidaying as seriously as they take striking. And they’re good at it. They get 2 weeks off for Christmas and then another 2 weeks for February half term. In February they split the country up into 3 zones, each one taking a different 2 week period. This spreads the load evenly, but it means there are a total of 8 Saturdays in the winter season when the traffic can be pretty nasty.

Here’s a list of dates when you should expect a lot of cars on the road. You should plan your journey more carefully on these dates and take some precautions to make sure you don’t get caught out.

HEADING UP THE MOUNTAIN

Traffic up the mountain21st & 28th December 2024 – You may find the days either side of these will be busier than usual too.

8th, 15th, 22nd February & 1st March 2025 – The 15th & 22nd February will be particularly bad.

HEADING DOWN THE MOUNTAIN

Traffic down the mountain28th December 2024 & 4th January 2025– If it is snowing on these dates, the traffic will be horrendous!

15th & 22nd February and 1st & 8th March 2025 – The 22nd February & 1st March will be the worst dates.

The Annecy Carnival the 15th March and the Geneva Motor Show is the 1st March. You should avoid these areas after 8am if you can.

BE PREPARED – BRING PLENTY OF FOOD AND WATER

Food and Water on Ski Transfer JourneyHowever you are getting to and from the resort, whether it be on a shared ski transfer with Ben’s Bus, a private transfer or driving in your own car, make sure you have enough food and water, especially if you are diabetic. Keep any medicines in your hand luggage and make use of the toilets before you get into your vehicle.

It’s not unusual for an airport transfer from Geneva to Tignes to take 5 or even 6 hours instead of the usual 3 & 1/2 hours. So bring a book, some games for the kids and lots of pre-downloaded videos to view on your device.

AVOID THE MOUNTAIN ROADS BETWEEN 7AM – 2PM

Snail's Pace Mountain TrafficPlan your journey in advance. If you’re heading up to the resort, try to get to Grenoble or Albertville by 8am. Between 11am and 3pm the roads climbing the mountain can be moving at a snail’s pace. When leaving the resort, try to do it before 07:00 or after 14:00. The worst areas are between Bourg St Maurice – Moutiers (transfers from Val Thorens & Les Menuires don’t take that road), the ring road around Grenoble and the Lyon and Chambery motorway peages.

If you’re on a Ben’s Bus leaving Grenoble, Geneva or Lyon Airports between 9am – 4pm, you will probably hit some heavy traffic. Your Ben’s Bus eTicket will mention if we have allowed extra time for your journey. If you are heading to La Plagne, Les Arcs, Val d’Isere or Tignes, our drivers may have to take a legal break en-route. This is to comply with EU legislation and is designed to protect all road users. Use the facilities at the airport or in the resort before you leave as not all of our vehicles have toilets. If you need to go en-route, just ask the driver to pull over at the next convenient place.

LOCAL KNOWLEDGE IS GOLD!

Ben's Bus Ski Transfer VehiclesBook your ski transfer with a reputable and established company. Ben’s Bus has been working in the mountains for 15 years and works with local coach companies. Our drivers know the cheeky short cuts and how to avoid the bottlenecks. Our coordinators consult traffic websites and traffic cameras and our drivers and reps report where the roads are congested.

Top Tip: Don’t rely completely on Sat-Nav as it might try to take you across mountain passes that are closed in the winter!

CHOOSE YOUR DATES WISELY

French School Holiday Dates

The easiest way to avoid the rush and the crowds is to take your ski holiday in January or March. You’ll also get cheaper deals on accommodation and the queues for the ski lifts will be much smaller. Plus, you’ll get that table at your favourite restaurant! This website is a good source of information about school holidays in France https://about-france.com/school-holidays.htm Of course if you have kids in school, then that’s not possible.
